Invitation Letter
v1.1, 29 April 2025
IRAS:321809
Welcome and thank you for taking time to read this information.
Your GP has referred you to the hospital to investigate your symptoms to rule out bowel cancer. The hospital will arrange to see you in the hospital setting soon. We are reaching out to invite you to participate in a research study as your hospital clinic is part of the study and your doctors think you may be eligible. The main aim of the study is to check if a simple blood test can help doctors identify individuals who may require specialist tests to diagnose bowel cancer more efficiently. We believe that this may help with early detection of bowel cancers.
We encourage you to read through the study documents before you attend the Endoscopy or Radiology Department for the tests your doctor has requested. This will give you time to understand the research and ask any questions you may have.
If you agree to take part in the MOTION study, here is what will happen
You will meet a member of the research team during your hospital appointment. They will explain the study in detail, answer any questions you may have, and ask you to sign a consent form if you are willing to participate.
A single 20ml blood sample (approximately 4 teaspoons) will be taken. This blood draw will be in addition to any routine diagnostic tests you are already scheduled to undergo.
At the end of your referral pathway, you may be invited to complete a short survey, which should take approximately 10–15 minutes. Participation in the questionnaire is entirely optional.
You will have the option to choose whether any leftover blood from your sample may be stored for potential use in future ethically approved research studies.
Here you can download and read the official study documents.
Taking part in the MOTION study is entirely voluntary. You are free to choose whether or not to participate.
You can withdraw from the study at any time, without needing to provide a reason. Your decision to withdraw will be respected.
Your decision to participate or withdraw will not affect your medical care or your legal rights in any way.
If you withdraw from the study, any data collected before your withdrawal may still be used in anonymised study reports. This data will be used in a way that protects your privacy and confidentiality.
If you have any questions or require more information about the MOTION study, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the study team.
